KFE scientists said they modified the process to extend the time period by using tungsten instead of carbon in the “diverter” to remove impurities and heat generated from the fusion reaction. The ultimate goal of KSTAR is to maintain the plasma temperature at 100 million degrees for at least 300 seconds by 2026.
These experiments will help develop the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, also known as ITER, in southern France, the world’s largest tokamak.
